Espera-n-to is an artificial language that was created, I think, around the end of the 19th century; it is composed of words and structures of the most common (European) languages and intended to help overcome, err, language barriers.Google ergo sum

I studied Esperanto for a year before realising what a dumb idea it is.
A language needs a physical home to be relevant, current and alive. It needs a group of people as reference, some mother-tonguers, otherwise we might just as well choose Latin.
Also, as LEt notes, it is a European invented language with latin roots and the roman alphabet.
A neutral, international language is a nice idea, a nobel objective and an interesting intellectual exercise (Interlingua is another attempt), but somehow I don't place much hope in their improving understanding between the diverse peoples of our damp lump of rock.

Their headquarters was just around the corner from me in Holland Park. I used a bit of Esperanto in one of my early sf novels, as I recall. I
think it's a fun hobby and believe that that's how Harry sees it, these days.Pre-order or Buy my latest titles in Europe:

Harry's American but has lived in many parts of the world. He now lives between England and the US. He lived in Ireland for many years and might still have a place there, I'm not sure. Saw him a few months ago and we had a great old farts evening. We've been friends for some forty years.Pre-order or Buy my latest titles in Europe:

Yep. I've got an albino on my back. Harry's got a rat on his.
Probably better than having a coke-fixing, pipe-smoking detective in a deerstalker sitting on your shoulder.Pre-order or Buy my latest titles in Europe:
