  • Nation States

    http://www.nationstates.net/

This might open up some interesting political debate - its a "nation" simulator, similar to those political affiliation tests you can do - asks the same questions and shows the implications that those views have for your fictional society.

I am currently the proud ruler of:

    The Republic of Mu Thulan

The Republic of Mu Thulan is a tiny, socially progressive nation, renowned for its absence of drug laws. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 5 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The enormous government concentrates mainly on Social Welfare, although Healthcare and Education are secondary priorities. The average income tax rate is 26%. A small but healthy private sector is dominated by the Pizza Delivery industry.

Crime is relatively low. Mu Thulan's national animal is the Tsathogguan Toad Demon and its currency is the Cthuleons.
Batman: It's a low neighborhood, full of rumpots. They're used to curious sights, which they attribute to alcoholic delusions.

Robin: Gosh, drink is sure a filthy thing, isn't it? I'd rather be dead than unable to trust my own eyes!

We played this before. I had a nation of 'communist monkeys' ruling the Nation of Salmongeriz. It got boring and tedious. Theres also problems with the game engine. Because taxlevels tend to stay at 100% even after large tax cuts.

All in all, this game is just to promote the book Jennifer Government. Which I found to be lacking a critical view on 'neo-liberalist corporatism'. He isn't that good a writer to take on the challenge.

I expected a somewhat counterweight view to Brave New World that critiqued socialism, (and scientism, modernism). This book didn't do it for me in that way that I had hoped it would. It needed a more serious tone.
Got some small laughs from it though..

It's also spawned a lot of free-form RP on the associated forums - here are a couple of the better results - all a bit old, since they're from when I was still actively involved:

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=282736 - The Dread Lady Nathicana visits the Empire of Kalessin (continuing)
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=289167 - The land of Silmesse appears (unfinished)
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=274491 - S.H.O.D.A.N.'s Sannyasi through Mordor, the Empire of Kalessin, and a couple of other nations... (unfinished - first page mainly OOC spam)
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=278407 - Mateo's End - The Dread Lady Nathicana has her vengeance upon a traitor. (Warning - torture!)
                http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=278275 - D'ron's Wedding
http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=302278 - "Lord G.O.D. in the Garden of Hell"
                http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=316921 - the above, cont.
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=282980 - A rather good 'desert-island' RP, led by Gehenna.
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=317880 - Wombat News Archive - a satirical view of the Nationstates RP-world.
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=294030 - A particularly amusing issue of the Wombat News..
