Strange goings-on in the Southern United States. Black churches burning, the Klan rallying in South Carolina...It's going to be a long, hot, bitter summer, i'm afraid.

Now, my small, cosmopolitan city is added to the list of communities in the US stricken with the shock and fear of a psychotic gunman. Sometimes, i think this country is going mad.

History is occupied by the present. One recent "historical battlefield" I've been delving into deals with eastern Europe's past and our ongoing attempts to make sense of its terribly tragic complexities -- and in some cases use it for present purposes.

"Lithuania wants to erase its ugly history of Nazi collaboration—by accusing Jewish partisans who fought the Germans of war crimes."
        http://www.slate.com/articles/news_a...nist_past.html

Lithuania neglects the memory of its murdered Jews
        http://www.theguardian.com/commentis...wartime-crimes

And, most provocatively, the author of the last piece is taken to task:

"In Timothy Snyder’s Bloodlands, Hitler and Stalin are one and the same. And the partisans — Jewish fighters included — only encouraged German crimes."
        https://www.jacobinmag.com/2014/09/t...-snyders-lies/

Haven't read Bloodlands but a friend has and has spoken quite a bit about it to me. If the quotes are not exercises in distortion, there is certainly some thought provoking critique there (and a few points I'd say the author failed to make).

Here's Wikipedia on one of the partisan perpetrated massacres: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koniuchy_massacre

Holocaust Denial, sure is pernicious. In all its forms.
