  • Poetry of the First Space War

I'm not really a poet, nor have never really written poetry outside of University Creative Writing. Apart from the odd mushy love poem to my girlfriend. Anyway, this afternoon, I was struck with the idea of writing a series of poems which have a science fiction war setting. Well, I came up with the Line 'I don't wanna be a Starship Trooper' and it went from there. Hopefully, people like it to want to see more and hopefully, my poetry writing skills improve over time.

    Space War

    It’s finally arrived.
The day we knew would come.
    Aliens from outer space.
Have picked a fight with us.

Boy have they picked the wrong people
    To bomb our outer planets.
They didn’t count on true American Space Grit.
We’ll smash them into star dust.

We’ll make the slimy green bastards pay.
    Green or grey, who cares?
We’ve finally got our space war.
Let’s go and give them hell!

Don’t you make me a Starship Trooper

Don’t you make me a Starship Trooper.
    When the Space War comes.
I don’t want to fight the species
    That comes from outer space.
I want us to rise above it all.
Become one with the galactic denizens.

Are these your new towel heads, your new Japs?
Why put on my space armour and go and die on some
    Alien world.
I’m tired of the death down here.
Why should I take it out there?

Don’t you make me a Starship Trooper.
    When the Space War comes.
I don’t want to die out there.
    Space looks so alone.

    Drafted

    I dreaded the grey envelop.
I see it on the mat.
    I know what it wants.
    They want me signed up.
    I’ve been drafted.
To fight the first galactic war.
They want me to do my bit.
    Don’t they know I’m scared?
    I don’t want to fight.
I’ve got a good life here.
    I’ve got University coming up.
Probably a good job in five years.
    I don’t want to be a marine.
    I don’t want to fight.
They’ll all call me a coward.
    But surely, that’s my right?
    I’ve been drafted.
To fight the first galactic war.
They want me to do my bit.
I just want to say no.
    Surely, that’s my right?

(Criticism desired. I don't mind if you openly say you don't like them. Just no 'die die die, never write again'.)
