I haven't read this book yet, but the cover came up on my usual Amazon look-abouts and I wonder if "Lucky Leif and the Longships" springs to anyone else's mind at first glance? It's part of a series, too, which seems to do the similar task of imagining what it would be like if the Norse had a more lasting presence on this continent from the time they've first been thought to have arrived.
