I find it useful to recommend some of the information sources we use and to discover new ones. The problem is the language barrier, of course, but many serious publications have English editions (EL Pais is very remarkable!) or at least weekly summaries.
From a European point of view I have to offer some links (excluding UK/Eire papers).
â€EL PAIS“ , Spain
The Electronic Edition of El Pais is curently available only to subscribers. There is, however, a free English edition available online through the International Herald Tribune's webpage. This is a summarized, 8-page edition covering only national news, published electronically in PDF format.
http://www.iht.com/global.html (bottom!)
â€Der Spiegel“, Germany
... still the country’s foremost political weekly magazine. It offers a selection summaries of articles on important international and national matters.
http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/english
â€F.A.Z.“ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), Germany
A weekly English edition of the renowned daily covering a wide range of aspects.
Slightly on the right of the centre, but good journalism in any case.

â€Le Monde diplomatique“ , France
Contents unfortunately only accessible to subscribers.
http://mondediplo.com/ â€Guardian“ readers aparently get a weekly suplement
Italy, Benelux, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe next please!
Kind regards, l'أ‰tranger
