There are Elrics going back several generations now. The Worst Boy in the School where Jim Cawthorn's sister worked in the 70s was called Elric and there was another Elric heavily into weapons, fatigues and such who was looking for me about twenty years ago -- I'm not sure whether he wanted to shoot me or make me his leader... In fact, I signed a book for an Elric in Austin at the last signing I did in Book People! I agree it's an awful burden. Happily, however, I haven't met that many Yyrkoons...
It could be worse, see. Yyrkoon Zand ?

I am a little embarrassed to say that I thought once about naming children from your characters if I have kids some day. :oops:

Maybe I will just use Dorian since that is a real name. ;)

By the way Mike, the names of your characters are always used up on every online role-playing game that comes out. They are all used up even when I buy the game the first day it comes out,hehe.

In the seventies there were dozens of poor little buggers in Notting Hill called things like Frodo and Bilbo and Gandalf. I'm sure they're these days hiding behind 'Fred' and 'Bill' and 'Alf', but their mums and dads know their dark secret.
I was tempted to call my son Golom or Sauron, just to even things up a bit, but I caught myself in time and called him Max. Wonder if there are any retirement houses in the suburbs these days called Chez Mordor or
Dun Questin. I wonder if there are any Harries out there who were born Arioch. Can you get christened with the name of a Lord of Hell ?

I've discovered that myself, lemic, when I've tried to use pseudonyms or passwords for servers and so forth. I'm not allowed to use any of my own characters unless I'm prepared to be Elric2005 or somesuch. Elric, incidentally, though trademarked for specific purposes (games, books, movies and so on) is actually a real name in the same range as Ulric.
Just a bit unusual. Lots of Erics, of course, as in Eric the Fish. And Terry Pratchett claims all HIS readers are called Kevin. Just as all British sf writers before 1965 were called Ken or Ted. My belief is that all fantasy writers since me and Tolkien are called Terry...
Corum is close to being a real name, too, though he came about as an anagram of Jeremiah Cornelius. Whose name came from a greengrocer in Notting Hill, just as Josef Kiss's name came from a French Polisher in Blenheim Crescent, Notting Hill. Quite a lot of my names also come from
Brompton Cemetery and a few from Kilburn Cemetery.

Yeah, it's a bit brutal, naming your kid Brooklyn or whatever. I must say the fashion for calling girls Meredith ('Lord' in Welsh) is a bit weird, too.
I made sure my kids all had middle names they could use if they preferred them, or names which could be diminished to something they fancied -- Sophie was a rare name when we called her that, so we gave her Elizabeth so she could be Bess, Betty, Liz, Lizzie, Liza and so on, if she preferred. Same with my daughter Katharine. Max's middle name was Edward. Of course everyone of my generation is either called Mike or Dave, which can become a bit confusing. There are an awful lot of Michael Johns (thus M.John Harrison being about Harrison's only option to distinguish himself from all the others) and not a few John Michaels or
David Michaels and Michael Davids. I must admit I still prefer traditional names to made up ones and it irks me when people misspell ordinary names (as with Hillary Clinton, given that the root is Latin and should be pretty easy to spell right) but then that's an Old Fart grumble I allow myself from time to time. After all, I'm more likely to vote for someone called Hillary than I am for someone called George... :)

That is very fascinating about the origins of names and use of pseudonyms. That is a most clever way of choosing names. :clap:

I just chose the screen name of Lemec from one of my role-playing characters from about ten years ago. Later I found out there is a company called Lemec out there when I used the Google search. My friend used that name in a story about our characters, that is why I am fond of it,hehe, even an imagined name I often need to post it as Lemec303 and so forth.

I mention it now, because I want to tell you that my real name is: Joseph William Grabiak, so you can call me Joe if you want, I just thought Lemec would be different in case there were more than one Joe here. :lol:

Well, are we revealing names now? I'll bite!

Mine came from Azrael, which first seeing it, said it phonetically wrong and it came out as Azariel, so i kept it and has been the name of a character in several of my stories. My real name is: J.D. Perez, which Lemec would notice if he took a look at his myspace, as I tend to put my real name from time to time :D

As to what the J and D stand for, well, we all have to retain a lil' mystery!
P.S. My fathers name is Joe, and no, thats not what the J stands for :lol:

Probably. I used to live in a village in Somerset where one of the houses was called 'Entwood'.

Sounds familiar. I'm wondering if that's the same chap who was once a member of Nomads. I think the latter ("make you his leader") would be true in his case. :D If it's the same one, he was actively serving in the US Navy at the time, aboard an aircraft carrier, hence a predisposition towards fatigues and guns.

Ahh, timing. During the course of The Move -- any move to a new abode that takes longer than a month can legitimately be capitalized :D -- I've found a lot of old Nomads stuff, correspondence (including from the above 'Elric'), old issues of the Megaflow Manifesto, etc. I had to forcibly drag myself 'back on mission' to unpack, else I'd have spent an hour just digging through that old stuff with the occasional "oooh" or "wow, I'd forgotten about that." :)
