I think most of the pre-50s women looked more like real women. I suspect that eating disorders, of the kind we're familiar with today, were extremely rare then.

Guy, have you seen Art Out of Time by Dan Nadel ? A wonderful collection of strange comics, mostly from the turn of the 20th century, which make Little Nemo look prosaic...

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some Dick there, mainly hidden in the folds of the newspaper.

Also either Roy Crane’ Buz Sawyer or Raeburn Van Buren’s Abbie’n’Slats, I’m pretty sure. Also, on reflection, the Dondi strip looks more like a third page, not half. (I hope no-one was misled seriously by my earlier egregious error.) Clearly more research is needed and I’ll be applying for a grant. (Could pay for my new glasses…)

Good to hear you enjoyed Art Out Of Time, Mike. Yes, I got it for me burfday last year from my good pal Kent Worcester, CLR James buff and editor of Arguing Comics among other fine volumes. Nadel has pulled together some great (and hugely varied) pages there, a fab book; glad you liked it too, Mike.

For many years I thought Nemo did look prosaic, but recently I have come to appreciate it more. There’s a great volume out, subtitled “So Many Splendid Sundays” which reprints the strips at full size; far and away the best way to see them, short of investing in original newspaper pages, which can occasionally be picked up for reasonable prices.

I was also lucky enough to see the Masters Of American Comics exhibition at the Jewish Museum, Manhattan, and the Newark Museum, in December. Several Nemo original art pages, looking sharp and lovely; lots of Segar Popeye to enjoy in sequence, and a major treat for me, Lionel Feininger’s Kin-der Kids and Wee Willie Winkie strips in their original newspaper page form. Not to mention Eisner, Kirby, Kurtzman, Crumb, Ware, Herriamn and more. There’s also a pretty good book of this exhibition, though it doesn’t (couldn’t) match the experience of seeing the pages themselves.

Every time I see the heading of this thread, I think that no good Prince Gaynor has returned yet again. Now there's some fan fiction for you. A Gaynor sighting. You're walking down the street and you suddenly realize that the large man in the trench coat and hat, with his face covered in bandages is not the invisible man, but is indeed Prince Gaynor the Damned, having found his way to your little corner of the Multiverse. What do you do? I'd email Mike post haste and hope Una Persson was handy.

Now as to Mitzi Gaynor, you ever see her in the Frank Sinatra film, The Joker is Wild? Man she was hot in that one. Ahem.

Wish I'd seen that exhibition, Guy. I had a large size Nemo for a while. I love 'em. But some of those in the Nadel book have a weird quality which for me at any rate makes them just as good. Paul MINCT hasn't been seen around lately, either as himself or Gaynor. Makes me uneasy. Maybe he's in that Elric story forming vaguely in the back of my mind...?
