I was just brooding by the comp, thinking about destiny. Its a literary theme used so much by fantasy that it holds no meaning anymore, and usually to the extent tht its a "good" destiny. I find Mike's work differ from this, where characters are doomed by their fates rather than blessed. Mmm, this soul gives me strength, but it killed my woman!
The idea of doomed destiny is hardly used anymore in america, i guess its the hatred for happy ending over tragedies that fuel that notion here in the states. What other doomed fates are there outside those of EC?
Within S&S, i think of Karl Edward Wagner's Kane, whose ambition for world power was, oddly enough, foiled by women more often than not.
