I've reread the above-titled story in the Mabinogion and am seeing some similarities to Elric.
To wit, Arthur and Owein at Gwyddbwyll (presumably Chess) and the Emperor after a rider comes with a very long description of what they were wearing asks Owein 'to call off his Ravens', and 'the game begins again'. So it continues on. All this really a dream, as I'm sure you know, of Rhonabwy with Iddawg the Embroiler of Britain providing the exposition of the identities of all these horsemen. Admittedly it was written down in the 11th Century, under Norman influences and the Wars all around in that 'other troubled time'.
Did you read the Mabinogion, Lady Charlotte Guest version I assume, before writing your first Elric story?
