I could also dig up a couple of really dashing titles from imperial Ethiopia, if you like - but "Lidge", "Blatta", "Fitaurari", "Dejazmatch", "Leul", "Ras", "Negus" (and many more) - but they wouldn't be apparent to others who drop by, would they?

ARRGGH! Ye scurvy-dog! I be liking yer suggestion of Pirates matey!

For some reason I like the german ranks for the military (probably from playing online video games and always being "axis"). Not for any love of nazi's. Their ranks sound so sinister, especially the Waffen-SS one's (hmm, wonder why...).

How about Oberfeldwebel VonWeiner (Sergeant Major in Wehrmacht).

Nah, military one's seem too mean-spirited or imply some kind of control over others. Not my thing - unless I meet you in a game (Battlefield1942, Return to Castle Woflenstein/ET), then this VonWeiner will make you tremble! hehehehe...
When they had advanced together to meet on common
ground, then there was the clash of shields, of spears
and the fury of men cased in bronze; bossed shields met
each other and the din rose loud. Then there were
mingled the groaning and the crowing of men killed and
killing, and the ground ran with blood.

Well my opinion, fwiw, is that the idea of ranks seems a little like the military, which is not of the spirit of things imho. From an information point of view it is also redundant information since it is also possible to see how many posts someone has made. Perhaps it also encourages a higher quantity of posts at the expense of quality, which takes up more of Mike's time?

Hey man, ALL of my posts contain very important information of the highest quality. (HAHAHA  ).
          Just like this one!

But seriously, I agree. Some people like to have a rank, just like in college - they could just list a person's credits. I still like the "Freak-Scale". Ah well, I don't need a rank (of course this is all easy for me now that I'm a moderator); everyone can see I am a posting fool! I am sure Michael disregards 99% of what I say - hopefully!

Someone help me on my royalty: I didn't get the gender problem with Page-Squier-Knight-whatever-Lord. Can't a woman be knighted? I kinda liked that one because of the musical connection:
            Page [Jimmy - Led Zeppelin]
Squier [Chris - Yes (but spelled Squire)]
            Lord [Jon - Deep Purple]

Anything with either "Geezer" or "Grand Poobah" and I will vote for it.

How about all of us being COMRADES?
Comrade 1st class etc up to a few lonely "Comandantes" at the top.
              Comandante Michael, sub-Comandante Berry.

And it is fitting for both ladies and machos.

              Viva la guerrilla!

When was the last time you met a female King or Lord?

My humble suggestion would be to use the Fear & Loathing "states of being":

                  Square
                  Hip
                  Groovy
                  Cool
                  Gonzo

To be honest they're probably too vague, but I'm sticking to my guns... and packing them in the trunk of a red convertible.

                    How about:

Seeker of Tanelorn - up to 50 posts?
Resident of Tanelorn (Tanelornian?) - over 50 posts?
Champion of the Balance - over 100 posts? or Dreamthief (as suggested by Marie above). Or Chaos Engineer (checking DeeCrowSeer's signature above)
Eternal Companion - over 300 posts?
Eternal Champion - over 500 posts?

                    Grey Lord = moderator?
Spirit of the Balance = admin?

                        How does this sound, then?

                        (1) Moonbeam Traveller
                        (2) Citizen of Tanelorn
                        (3) Champion of the Balance
                        (4) Guardian of the Grail
                        (5) Eternal Champion

Moderators and Editors = Chaos Engineer

Site Administrator = Servant of the Runestaff

I don't think we should change Site Admin though. Simply because people won't know who to contact if I am the Servant of the Runestaff.

Unfortunately the rank system isn't optional and so we must come up with something more interesting.

                          Sounds good Berry.

Aww, no title for Berry. I guess its "No soup for you!".

Yeah, anyone coming here would be puzzled trying to find out who's running the show if you were the Servant of the Runestaff.

I like all these suggestions (VonWeiner - always the diplomat). I especially like the Moorcockian(? :? ) ones suggested by you and Grey Mouser.

Do we need a vote? I vote for those suggested by Berry. Anyone else?

I liked Grey Mouser's, too, but then Berry threw "Moonbeam Traveller" in there and that tipped the balance for me-- I like that.

                              Marie,

We may just have to ressurect the idea of the Church of the Moorcockian Multiverse. As seen in your post:
                              [broken link]

WWED? He would seek vengence while inadvertently killing his friends.

Yes I like Moonbeam Traveler too. It may be the first rank, but I think it sounds the prettiest. Ah Berry, that silver-tongued devil!
