newbie hello

was recently recommended to read the elric series and gave it a try. i must say, the first one was difficult to put down and was completed in two days! (a personal best for me! i'm not much of a reader). now, i am on to SOTSOF :D

I just finished Elric of Melnibone and Sailor on the Seas....can't wait to dig deeper.

I had the mistaken impression that Elric stories would be all gloom and doom, woe and nihilistic philsophizing. Imagine my utter joy to discover that they are nothing like that. Having loved the Howard Conan and Fafhrd and Grey Mouser books, I would put Elric as the next, intellectual, step up. Good-old fantasy.

What all these have in common, at least to this newbie, is an element of wierdness and mystery left unexplained. (For example: You want a floating city? You got it...no explainantion needed. It's sorcery of the most dreadful kind. Enough said, now on to the story). So little fantasy I read these days retains that almost naive sensablilty. I am also reminded of Lord Dunsany's tales.

Can't wait to read more!

Thanks. Dunsany was actually one of my favourites when I began writing the Elric stories, though I remain a great Leiber fan. I had actually tired of Howard by the time I started to read Elric, though I continue to respect and admire him, just don't enjoy him the way I did as a kid. But, as I've said elsewhere, probably Anderson's The Broken Sword (1954), which just predates the Tolkien trilogy, was one of my strongest influences.
Gloom and doom ? When you've finished the Elric books you might like to try Elric at the End of Time, which is pretty much the opposite of
that! My own spoof on the saga.
