Michael Chabon's 'Escapist'
The new issue of Escapist (#7, hit American stores yesterday) features an 80-page story by Chabon himself about a character named Mr. Machine Gun. I'm not even sure I think it's a very good comic, but I'm posting here because the parallels between this character and Elric are very strong. Think of Stormbringer as a semi-automatic and you get the general idea. Moorcock's memes live on . . .

Michael's a good friend. I'm still supposed to be writing an Escapist myself. In his case, I'm sure any reference is, like Alan Moore's or Neil Gaiman's, actual homage!

I know you've probably been asked this before, but what -- I say -- what were your thoughts when you first saw Dave Sim's Elrod parody in Cerebus, Mike? I didn't get the 'tall pointy hat' thing until I realised Sim was riffing off of the Conan/Elric comics, which in turn were based on the US Lancer paperbacks. :)

Jack Gaughan. I never forgave him for that hat. He was a drinking man. Last time I ever saw him he told me to tell people what a good job he'd done on those Elric covers... Suddenly, I was deaf.

Sorry, I've lead you away from demos99's question about Elrod.

I loved Dave's parody. As he knew. He'd been a little charey of what I'd think of it and I thought it was tremendous. I even bought the Elrod T-shirt. Sent him a snapshop of Eldrod's GunShop in Colombus, Miss, since I was sure he'd be pleased the old boy had settled down to make a decent living. That was the year they were giving away a free shotgun with every new truck at the lot next door. Elrod must a -- I say -- ol' Eldrod must a cleaned up on that one.
