The Elric Movie ◦ Speculation & Wish Lists Michael Moorcock's iconic Elric of Melniboné has been under (potential) development as a movie trilogy for many years now. This forum is dedicated to any news, speculations and discussions including fan-made actor mockups and/or casting suggestions relevant to a possible movie. Please note however that Mike rarely frequents this forum and questions regarding production of the film should be made in the Q&A forum.

Default How about Ron Perlman as voice of Stormbringer?

Christian Bale as Yyrkoon definitely sounds good.
Paul Bettany as Elric could work, or maybe Daniel Craig if not too busy doing Bond, but I think Elric needs to be more feminine looking.
Ron Perlman should have a part to play somewhere if this movie ever gets made, as he has a great voice and a good track record for sci-fi/fantasy movies and voice work - check out Hellboy 1/2 etc.

Guillermo del Toro should definitely direct/produce it.

I grew up with Michael Moorcock's awesome books which are so influential and think it's about time a modern film was made of one of them.

I do like the idea of Pearlman as Voice of SB, though Billy Zane would be my 1st choice (slightly more "seductive")

I thinkj Michael Moorcock's choice for the role of Elric is perfect. Paul Bettany has the look for someone who is not overmusceled. Too many actors have been incorrectly chosen in important roles, take for instance Orlando Bloom as Legolas. He looked about as elven as P Diddy looks like James Bond. It is sad when director's loose sight of the feel and look of the characters. Oh well, lets hope Mr. Bettany gets the role.

Default My vote

Not like it means anything, but my vote would be for Christian Bale. He has very striking and sharp features. His talents lend themselves to intense, complicated characters. And if you've ever seen stills from 'The Machinist' you would know he is willing to torture himself to make his body fit the role. In addition, he already has experience with action scenes involving swordplay.

Hello.

I think Paul Bettany would be great as Elric!

For Yyrkoon, i would vote for Christian Bale.

I think the best Yyrkoon would have to be Joaquin Phoenix. I'm not sure if he'd take it though; there are a lot of parallels with his character of Commodus in "Gladiator". He's just got that deranged glint in his eyes and that slight quiver in his voice that would be perfect for Yyrkoon, though.

I was thinking that Gaspard Ulliel could probably do a descent job as Elric. He's got the right look for the part, in my opinion.

I can't think of anyone because I believe anyone who plays a MM character will let me down. Sorta like Stephen King movies- great on paper, not so hot on screen. Especially when you've wanted a movie for 20+ years!

Just to throw my suggestion in the pot as well... I am pretty sure noone has mentioned him so far. SO what about Julian Rhind-Tutt, some of you might know him from the English series Green Wing where he plays "Dr Mac"

Here are a few pictures of him:

I just had a thought..Christopher Eccleston. Has the height, the general build, the angled/gauntish face. Also has enough of a name (Dr Who), and the acting ability. At the moment, I can't really see him with long white hair, but I reckon he could do it!

Or maybe Hugo Weaving (Mr Smith from Matrix trilogy). Again, similar sort of build and face, not so well known to be a draw card on his own, and hasn't been 'hollywood-ised'.

Default Elric Role

I love many of the suggestions listed here, most I consider excellent actors up to the job (and let's face it, with years of fan readership whoever IS picked has some big shoes -armor?- to fill).

Has anyone considered some lesser known actors? I'd suggest:
Timothy Olyphant of "Go", Michael Rosenbaum of "Smallville" (check him out with hair in "Wes Craven's Cursed") or possibly even Stephen Dorff of "Blade". It's just that when I think of Elric I think of a thinner face, sad, tortured but even a teensy bit evil by human standards - and fighting it/struggling with it. I'm not sure I'd buy some of the actors mentioned. I personally wasn't a big fan of Tom Cruise in say "Interview with a Vampire" (although he was great in "Risky Business") and I just think Elric would be closer in character to the Vampire film than a teen movie. I also think a lesser known might bring something fresh that we won't expect and we won't have ready made expectations of.

IMHO,
-MisterE

Default . . . a female?

Hello again,

I had seen another suggestion that maybe a "Woman" should
play Elric, especially because of your (Michael) description of
him.
After watching the Academy Awards tonight, I think ALL
should take a look at the unusual Beauty of "Tilda Swinton"
who won for her role in "Michael Clayton".
And she also starred in another Classic adaption, "The
Chronicles of Narnia".
http://www.shrinkle.com/ebay/tildacollage.jpg

MAN! . . . I can totally see her with "hair like smoke" out
of the Dragon Helm (and Red contacts).
She's got all the facial features, tall and thin (but have her
muscle up a bit) and Voila!
Check her out in the movie "Valmont" as well ;)

Recent Note:
WHOA! I found the thread and man, it sure brings out the
worst in people it did :(
And I agree that the Person meant that the Actress play
Elric AS a man. But hey, I'd go with my previous Actors 1st,
But Miss Swinton LOOKS Like "Goulds" version of Elric!
(See Book series covers).

Lastly,
Again, look at the work of this young Armourer, please
. . . you too Mr. Moorcock:
http://azmal.deviantart.com/
He does great work, and I'm sure he would contribute and
learn alot from veterans in Film making and Costume
Design.

Take care all,

-MAVIII

She really IS a perfect Elric...
Nice thought!
I totally agree that Christian Bale has everything it takes to be Yyrkoon.
The looks, the attitude, the talent...

I think Mike has allready said that he thinks Tilda Swinton would be great, but he said something along the lines that *a paper dog will chase an asbestos cat through hell before universal goes for that idea*
I tend to agree with him on both counts

I'll play the lead roll of Elric for the movie,

Am I an actor? Nope
Does anyone know me in Hollywood? Nope
Do I know about the whole sega? Yup
Do I think I could do the job? Yup
Can I relate to the character? Yup
Why would I want to? Because the story that needs to be told is grand.

I know it is a bold statement,
but if you need to fill the lead roll where do I sign up to make it happen?
