Default And the Winner of the Inaugural Moorcock Chalice Is...

(I used this cover cos it's my favourite - being the one I first purchased in 1978)

Mike's opulent, decadent, brutal and beautiful novel of courtly intrigue and unresolved passions has, deservedly, come out ahead in this years poll, defeating the scurrilous picaresque of the equally deserving conclusion to the Between the Wars quartet - The Vengeance of Rome.

The Final Standings are also printed below. Obviously the Knock Out nature of the competition coupled with the random draw will not mirror the absolute popularity (or quality for that matter) of the novels. That would probably require a league table (perhaps with multiple divisions) which is (sadly) beyond my time committments to deliver.

The final standings are:

Gloriana 79
The Vengeance of Rome 56
Stormbringer 52
The City in the Autumn Stars 45
Behold the Man 42
The War Lord of the Air 35
The End of All Songs 34
The Eternal Champion 29
Phoenix in Obsidian 28
The Jewel in the Skull 27
An Alien Heat 24
The Quest for Tanelorn 24
Mother London 23
The Bull and the Spear 20
Elric of Melniboné 18
The War Hound and the World's Pain 16
King of the City 15
The Black Corridor 15
The King of the Swords 15
The Brothel in Rosenstrasse 14
The Condition of Muzak 13

Not a precise science by any means, but I've taken the liberty of aggregating the individual scores of multi-part works* to get a total for the overall trilogy/quartet and it's quite interesting:

Gloriana 79
The Dancers at the End of Time 59 (The End of All Songs 34, An Alien Heat 24, The Hollow Lands 1)
The Vengeance of Rome 56
Stormbringer 52
The City in the Autumn Stars 45
Behold the Man 42
The Swords of Corum 37 (The Knight of the Swords 12, The Queen of the Swords 10, The King of the Swords 15)
The History of the Runestaff 36 (The Jewel in the Skull 27, The Mad God's Amulet 3, The Sword of the Dawn 3, The Runestaff 3)
A Nomad of the Time Streams 35 (The War Lord of the Air 35, The Land Leviathan 0, The Steel Tsar 0)
The Eternal Champion 29
Phoenix in Obsidian 28
The Chronicles of Castle Brass 28 (Count Brass 3, The Champion of Garathorm 1, The Quest for Tanelorn 24)
The Chronicles of Corum 28 (The Bull and the Spear 20, The Oak and the Ram 3, The Sword and the Stallion 5)
Mother London 23
Elric of Melniboné 18
The War Hound and the World's Pain 16
King of the City 15
The Black Corridor 15
The Brothel in Rosenstrasse 14
The Condition of Muzak 13
The Skrayling Tree 13
The English Assassin 12
Fabulous Harbours 11
Blood 10
The Chinese Agent 9
The Dreamthief's Daughter 9
The Vanishing Tower 8
Jerusalem Commands 8
The Laughter of Carthage 7
Warrior of Mars 6 (City of the Beast 3, Lord of the Spiders 2, Masters of the Pit 1)
The Ice Schooner 5
The Revenge of the Rose 4
The Rituals of Infinity 4
A Cure For Cancer 3
Byzantium Endures 3
The War Among the Angels 3
The Winds of Limbo 3
the Russian Intelligence 2
Bane of the Black Sword 2
Breakfast In The Ruins 2
The Final Programme 2
The Sailor on the Seas of Fate 2
The White Wolf's Son 2
The Dragon in the Sword 1
The Shores of Death 1
The Sleeping Sorceress 1
Weird of the White Wolf 1
The Blood-Red Game 0
The Fortress of the Pearl 0

*I haven't combined the scores for Elric or Erekosë novels because prior to the Orion/WW omnibuses they weren't been published in omnibus format, nor have I combined the Cornelius or Pyat Quartets for obvious reasons.

I mised out on the earliest rounds of this, which is tragic, as three of my favorite books (Land Leviathan, Steel Tsar, and Blood Red Game) didn't get any votes. That breaks my heart. Blood Red Game may be the one book of Mike's I have reread the most. I think it's brilliant!

Still stunned that Mother London didn't get higher. EVerybody always talked about how great it was, and I didn't buy that. But when I finally read it... yep. Mother London is a winner.

Still... I think Glorianna is a great book, as well as City in the Autumn Stars, so I was happy to see them make it so far.

All hail the queen.

Can we do this again next year? I'd like to see if she can keep the cup.

Even with all the series of books clubbed together im quite amazed at the amount Glory won by.
Although if you had to club together the Between the Wars books she would only have won by 5 points.
Even though, the follow up next year is going to be interesting.

As I said in the Q&A version of this thread, just a quick note to point those who are unfamiliar with Gloriana in the direction of the First Chapter.

It's all arbitrary so I'm not having a go - especially after you've done the extra number crunching, but what are those obvious reasons? Personally I see the Pyat Qrt as very much a multi-volume novel, although in fairness they've never been published as a omnibus, so I see your point there, but the Cornelius Qrt have been publish in a single vol and as a boxset - and seem to be intrinsically linked, except maybe Final Prog, which is more easily read as a stand alone. It's all subjective, I know, and of course I'm only really putting my 2 pence worth in because I'd have like to have seen both these works score much higher up.

HAIL THE QUEEN - MAY SHE GET SOME TONIGHT!!!
