Elric Movie Status in 2009
I haven't heard any recent news and am beginning to think Universal will drop the deal next year. This might be to the good in the long run. We'll see.

Care to explain, Mike? Or too early to give something away that you've got the backburner: like "Elric the Broadway Show"?

Makes sense. I'm sure you're right about Universal. I never could see them producing Elric, being family friendly and all.

Monty Pythons gone Broadway and there Spamalot's looks great.
Marvel's very own Wolverine is hosting the Tonys.

Do I understand correctly, Mike, that the above quote means that you want to step away from thinking about a movie version for a while?
It's probably good to wait until all things are right, everything satisfactory before getting fully into the project again. imho
A different studio sounds like a good idea. New plans, better cooperation, renewed excitement etc.
I know a few people who go by the old saying of stepping away from a problem or something they are working on, to think about the solution or next phase, then return to the subject. It seems to work more often than not.
I'm sure that you know the best way to go about the whole production.
I sure will enjoy hearing about everything, when it gets started up once more.
I wish you the best of luck, mate!
Thanks!

This is disappointing if true. Are they worrying about their bottom line again? This artificially deliberately created depression seems to pervading every sphere of human activity.
I wonder if an illustration slide show with music and voice soundtrack might be twice as effective for a hundredth the cost? My 10 year old used Microsoft movie maker and dvd maker to make his own family movie this Christmas and it was pretty good!

I could be reading too much into this thread.
If I am mistaken, I am very sorry.

Sounds like Mike is off the idea of Elric as a musical.

Oh!, right. Had a 50% on that one, was not sure if it was part of the musical talk or not....
That's my fears and worries getting to me I guess, now I can sit back and enjoy once more. -paranoia from living somewhat near to Area 51.
I have one of those Hawkwind dvds, it advertised Chronicle... Very cool!
Anyway, I'll still be here, dreaming about the Elric movie, I can still clearly imagine it bursting onto the screen while I sit on the edge of my seat!

Hate to piss on peoples parade, but I don't think the movie is feasible. The subject matter is too evil. Choruses of screaming slaves ? Soul sucking hell blade? Not only would Hollywood not do it , the target audience would be puny. Also, who wants to see Hollywood screw another great book up...Hopefully I'm wrong , but

I suspect it couldn't be done Hollywood style, too. But I do think it could be done.

Anything can be done providing the producers are open minded enough to accept the authors (Mike's) input into the film.
Perhaps some short tasteful narration would help the audience grasp the meaning of the more complex portions of the story?

The simple way of doing it is to make the dichotomy a little more emphatic -- that is, Elric would be trying to escape his culture a bit more enthusiastically! As long as the Melniboneans are seen as casually evil, there's not likely to be a problem when Elric tries to lead a different life or at least seek different experience...

I agree with you Mike. I also thought this was a part of his motive in Elric leaving Melnibone.
As for portraying evil, I dont think you need to pull any punches whatsoever, Hollywood has exploited every concievable angle and image of Evil in its quest to make us scream louder and squeeze every last cent out of us in the process. If it was my movie I would make it visually accurate as it was described and for good reason and not pull any punches. I remember watching Hellraiser (Jesus Wept! lol) and The Thing and thinking ok thats pretty shocking. Nowadays I actually find the reality drama more shocking than the fantasy which is unreal so to speak.
