Default Copyright Infringement?

So I've noticed that over the past few years, more and more video games are taking influence from Moorcock's work, I was wondering at what point in time, or level, would or does, Mike ever thing about filing a lawsuit.

For example, the PS2 game Shinobi features a sword that steals souls, and if you don't kill enough it begins to steal the players..

This however, is what really got my attention

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/th...-xbox-360-ps3/

An upcoming game, featuring a character with white hair, and is titled "The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf"

I don't think you can get more blatant than that.

So to add to my question, does Mike ever think about filing claims against these companies, does it bother him?

AAHHH! THE WITCHER!!!

This, my friends, is a PC role-playing game based on Andrzej Sapkowski's novels (which already looked like blatant Elric ripoffs to me).

The character in itself - a warrior/sorcerer with white long hairs and 2-handed sword, slaying demons - was already an Elric ripoff if you ask me, there was no need to attach the "White Wolf" nickname to it, really...

And

http://news.filefront.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/the-witcher-656.jpg

The PC game sold millions by the way, it's currently one of the most selling RPG's and it seems it will continue when it's out on consoles next year...

All the best,
Elfy

Bastards. You try to create something original and a bunch of people rip it off and make millions. I'm glad Tolkien never lived to see what HE spawned. I've contacted my lawyer, but haven't heard back yet. It's a 'passing off' situation rather than a copyright one. Trademarks, too, are involved. Copyright infringement is usually to do with text (or clearly copied drawings in the case of comics).

A "Stormbringer" would come handy, hmmm ? ;)

More seriously... I'm sorry about this. I agree that most "Heroïc Fantasy" labeled things these days are LOTR ripoffs; I'm SO not surprised about Elric being copied. I feel for you seeing this (but I guess it's not the first time anyway).
Greets...

I remember that I was pretty angry when The Jurassic Park became such a hit, simply because it reminded me too much of Doyle's The Lost World. And then the second movie came out titled "The Lost World: Jurassic Park"! I was furious! Now, in a similar manner, we get "The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf"... as if "White Wolf: A Novel of Druss the Legend" by the late David Gemmel wasn't enough.

One of my colleagues used to work at the Hungarian office of CDProjekt, the Polish publisher of The Witcher games, and still has contacts there. I doubt he would know much, but I'll have a talk with him on Monday.

Wow.

How blatant can you get? This screams rip-off from the get go.

I hope Mike sues them so hard it makes their ancestors hurt.

Default these are more than obvious similarities

Geralt exists in an ambiguous moral universe, yet manages to maintain his own coherent code of ethics.

Geralt lost all body pigmentation. Because of his pale skin and white hair, he is also known in Starsza Mowa (Older Speech) as "Gwynbleidd", the White Wolf.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300657/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hexer_(film)

"The film is essentially the then-unreleased TV series chopped into about 2 hours, and received very poor reviews from both fans and critics. The 13-episode TV series came out the following year. The series was much more coherent than the confusing movie, but was still considered a failure mostly due to the film's already bad reputation and due to vast changes to the source material."

Hey guys. I'm currently reading the first Elric novel (I'm loving it by the way ), and I've read the translation of The Last Wish (first novel in Witcher series). They're way different, and both books are excellent.

My colleague said that he remembers the term White Wolf used to refer to The Witcher's hero (Geralt of Rivia) already 5 years ago, when the original game was under development. That name appears in the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, on which the game was based, so CDProjekt is not really the one to carry any blame here, I guess, as they were just using the license. Incidentally, the English publisher of The Last Wish (the only book in the series translated so far to English), is Gollancz, who also published some of Mike's work. Frankly, while I'm also angered by such rip-offs, I don't think this one is worth wasting time and energy on and pursuing any further.

I don't have it ready to hand, but I recently found a great spoof article that covered the Cthulian outer gods filing a "Look and Feel" lawsuit against Microsoft. What made me think of this little tangent is that that it doesn't matter if the Witcher storylines are diferent, the "look and feel" of the character is similar, and some of his sales may be in part due to groundwork paved by Mike.

Found this while playing the game:

Seems like the similarity runs quite deep...

And by the way, the currency in the game is called oren! The nerve!

I guess nothing's more flattering. Buggers! We're currently talking to Universal about this. But Uni are probably distracted by the cuts there! Maybe we should just spread the news of the rip. Maybe I should write something about it somewhere. You do your best to make something as original as possible and one day the world is covered by xeroxes...

Mike, to make a tongue in cheek comment, did you ever consider suing Maggie Thatcher for copyright infringement when she turned the sublime farce of Miss Brunner into crass reality?

Too spooky. If she'd changed her name to Brunner, though, I'd have been on the case.

Surely, Brunner didn't have those big ol' ugly donkey teeth like Thatcher?
