I had a rollercoaster ride of a weekend. I don't normally post 'what I did' threads here, but I wanted to share the good, but I can't ignore the bad.

First, the bad. My foster sister committed suicide this past weekend. She had serious mental health issues and the medication was just not working. She lived with my parents from 16-23 years old, but remained a part of our family after she went out on her own. I had just been with her on Thursday, and sometime early Saturday morning she took her own life. She was very ill, but had problems acknowledging it. I am not overly sad. In many ways I feel relieved - for her, for my parents, and for her biological sisters who were at a loss as to how to help her (she was under the supervision of the State's mental health services, but it wasn't enough). But I also feel guilt (maybe there was more I could have done), and deep sadness for her biological sisters (since moving here from India, they have lost both parents, a grandmother, and now a sister). I just can't imagine what they're going through.

Yeah, that was bad news. Needless to say, I don't want to play up the good news too much. Hubby and I had a little getaway weekend, part of which was enjoying a very intimate (as in, small) concert with Johnny Winter. The band was EXCELLENT, and our hotel stay made us feel like we were a million miles away. It was just so relaxing, and very much needed, considering. I just can't believe I left my camera in the room, so I could only take crapphone pictures. :frown:

I've noticed Red Pearls isn't included in any of the 6 Elric Del Rey books I own : ( I assumed they included everything Elric up to the point they were published. I am reading the Elric stories sequentially so it's disappointing to realize just one story is missing. I read somewhere it was related to Black Petals, has it perhaps been integrated into the Black Petals story included in Swords and Roses? I'm hoping that's the case and I won't need to buy another book for the sake of one short story. Any insight would be appreciated :D

Hello Mike, I first want to send my best wishes on a speedy recovery with your health issues of late.

I recall that you have lived in Bastrop and was wondering if you still spend time there. I ask because I live in Austin and I remember the Bastrop fire that affected you and some of your friends and mine. We have gotten some good rain here lately so I am hopeful that we won't have to worry about fires like we did last year.

Oh, I am the lucky person that purchased and received the first Stormbringer that Raven Armoury made for the public outside of the one you have. I figure when the zombie apocalypse commences that I will have a good personal protector for it.

Cheers!

Not sure if anyone has read The Incal. It's a masterpiece science-fiction comic series, originally drawn by Moebius and penned by Alejandro Jodorowsky. The project came to fruition when the plug was pulled on Jodorowsky's high-budget film adaption of Frank Herbert's Dune. Moebius and HR Giger were hired by Jodorowsky to do the concept art.

When the project fell apart, HR Giger and screenwriter Dan O'Bannon went to work on Ridley Scott's Alien picture, Moebius and Jodorowsky conceived The Incal. Now, the story itself is not exactly Moorcockian, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Jodorowsky had never read a Moorcock book, but it's possible.

Without going into too much detail about the story, let me just say that the supreme emperor of the Galaxy in this book, is head of a decadent Empire (although not as cruel as Granbretan). He/she is also immortal and lives in a large embryonic sack, with a swirling fluid who's colour shifts and changes. The major difference is that this Emperor is a set of conjoined twins.

Another Jodorowsky comic called The Technopriests, which takes place in the same fictional 'Jodoverse' as The Incal, is about a young albino boy with long hair, shunned and mistreated by his powerful mother and sister, dreams of becoming part of the Technoguild, where he can create fantastic dream-scape 'videogames' to enterain the people of the galaxy, as the story follow his life, he goes through a series of ups and downs, and becomes a near-omnipotent figure of legendary power. Although his life-story is quite different to Elric's, his brooding personality, exceptional abilities in 'magic', and almost naive sense of right and wrong are reminiscent of the character.

Needless to say these are both excellent comics, The Incal being one of the best I've ever read. There is another series based in the same fictional universe called The Metabarons which is also worth looking into.

I just re-read this story a few minutes ago, I'm curious as to the very last scene in the book. After Moonglum hands Shaarilla the gem before he leaves with Elric. She stands there brooding, drops the gem into the heather, and turns to face the mouth of the gaping cavern. Why does she do this? Is she plannign to return to the cavern? If so, is it just that she's lost the will to live? Or did she come from the cavern in the first place and her whole unwitting agenda was to lead Elric to the ruined book? I find it a bit puzzling.

Great story by the way. I love the symbolism in Moonglum using the practical benefits of the book by taking the gems, whereas it seems like a useless pile of dust to Elric.

Hello, Moorcock's Miscellany!

I'm a first time-poster, long-time reader! I first started reading Michael Moorcock's novels when I graduated college in 2009 and bought the re-releases of the Elric novels from Ballentine Books as a graduation present to myself (everyone else got me a cake and money). Since then I've been reading everything Moorcock has written. I've read Hawkmoon and am working on Von Bek, and I read the White Wolf Saga (The Dreamthief's Daughter, The Skrayling Tree, and The White Wolf's Son) over the Christmas holiday this year.

One of the best memories I had of finding a Michael Moorcock book was on a my honey moon in Brighton. I found The Stealer of Souls on a shelf at a flea market in the North Laines next to a 100 year old book of Robert Herrick's poetry. I had The Stealer of Souls in my backpack already, so we bought the poetry book for three pounds.

For anyone that's interested in this sort of thing, my Republic side gunslinger on Star Wars: The Old Republic is Dyvm-tvar (Darth Malak) and my Sith side Inquisitor is Dyvm-Slorm (Mind Trick).

Can't wait to start talking to everyone!

I'd like to start by saying I'm a huge fan of Mr Moorcock's works. I think The Dancers at the End of Time series was the first I read, as a teenager, and the novels remain among my favourites to this day.

A few years ago I was lucky enough to track down all three novels as first edition hardcovers. Although the Gollancz Dancers cover is nice, I was struck by how magnificent the artwork is on the first edition of An Alien Heat. Like the novel itself, it's wonderfully redolent of both free-thinking 60s/70s psychedelia and fin de siècle decadence. Fast-forward to about a week ago: I've put it on a t-shirt.

Looks pretty rock'n'roll, I think - which is apt!

Now, I want you to know that I've no interest in making money from these, whatsoever. I've made only one, for myself, and have no intention of making more or selling any. I just love the book, I love the cover, and wanted to wear it. Not trying to breach anyone's copyright or make a buck.

Unfortunately, the book doesn't list who the artist is, but I'd be interested to find out.

Thought this might amuse any fellow fans of the series, in any case.

Just thought I'd put a post up here to say I penned a profile of Michael Moorcock for one of my 'Subculture' columns for the rock monthly 'Metal Hammer'.

I cover as diverse a selection of figures as the editor will let me get away with who've had some influence on the metal genre - previous subjects have ranged from Dennis Wheatley and Jack the Ripper, to the Victorian artist John Martin - so Mr Moorcock is in good company!

I'm afraid I'm a little behind on this (the issue in question is #230) but thought I would give a heads up anyhow - not least because I gave a plug for this site as it was part of my research for the piece. If there's any way of uploading a PDF here (I'm not very technologically literate - would insert image produce anything legible?) and anyone's interested, I'd be happy to do it.

Hope this may be of interest...
