Del Rey to publish definitive Elric editions
Following in the tradition of their acclaimed Conan omnibuses, Del Rey is set to give Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné the same treatment. Starting in February 2008, a new generation of readers will have the opportunity to experience the Elric saga in the order it was originally published under the series title Chronicles of the Last Emperor of Melniboné.
The first volume, Elric: The Stealer of Souls, will feature the original Elric stories from Science Fantasy magazine, previously published as The Stealer of Souls (1963) and Stormbringer (1977), as well as other material, plus a new introduction and explanatory material. Cover and interior illustrations are provided by John Picacio, who has previously graced the covers of Moorcock's Tales from the Texas Woods (1997), Wizardry and Wild Romance (2004) and most recently The Metatemporal Detective (2007).
Mike says of this new series: "The new Del Rey books are going to be stunning. If anything, John Picacio's interiors are better than his cover. The other artists are at the top of their form. Kaluta is next. I find his work breathtaking. These volumes will also contain original artwork from the time the stories first appeared and a lot of other background material." Future volumes will feature art by Steve Ellis and Julian Sweet, as well as a return by Picacio.
